Located in central eastern Alabama, Roanoke is a small town in Randolph County. Although this tiny town only has 3 schools serving grades K-12, there are some very interesting places to visit sure to afford fond memories for visitors of all ages.
The Doll Factory was created by one of Roanoke’s early residents. From 1900 to 1925, Ella Gaunt Smith began making dolls in her home using molded plaster of paris heads. Each doll’s face was uniquely painted. It is interesting to note that dolls were made for both Caucasian and African-American children.
At the Randolph County Historical Museum, many exhibits await visitors including some of the famous Roanoke dolls created by Ella Smith. Other exhibits afford the opportunity to view various pottery items produced in the area from around 1860. One special area is devoted to Indian and Civil War artifacts and documents.
For many people, a most interesting place to visit is Lebanon Christian Church. As was the case prior to and until the end of the Civil War, African-American worshipers were forced to congregate in wooden areas or open fields far away from the eyes of their masters. The church was established in 1864 by Moses Park.
